Increase Pixel Detail. At 96 to 128 px the image keeps most of its detail while still looking like pixel art. Lower values give a chunkier retro look.

Why a 48-Pixel Grid Exports at 528 Pixels, and Other Pixel Art Details

Set the Pixel Detail slider to 48, choose a 512 px download, and the file you get is 528 pixels wide. That is how the tool keeps pixels square and sharp: it enlarges every pixel by a whole number, so the output is the grid size times the nearest whole multiple. Here, 512 divided by 48 is about 10.7, which rounds to 11, and 48 times 11 is 528.

It is a small example of how pixel art follows different rules from ordinary image editing. The KromoTools Pixel Avatar Generator has two modes: one turns a photo into pixel art, the other builds a retro character from scratch. This guide explains how each works and where the details can surprise you.

How Photo to Pixel Works

As a pixel art avatar generator, Photo to Pixel shrinks your picture to a grid you choose, from 16 to 128 pixels square in steps of 4 (48 by default), then enlarges each cell back as a sharp square. Lower numbers give chunky, abstract results and higher ones keep more detail. Under the preview, the page shows the real grid size and color count. The palette options are:

  • Original keeps the photo's colors.
  • 64, 27 and 8 colors reduce each color channel to four, three or two levels. Those numbers are maximums, and the count shown under the preview can be lower.
  • Game Boy maps brightness onto four greens. Game Boy-style game jams typically cap art at 160 by 144 pixels with a four-color palette.
  • PICO-8 matches each pixel to the nearest of 16 fixed colors. PICO-8 is a fantasy console with a 128 by 128 display and a fixed 16-color palette, so a grid of 128 matches its screen size.
  • Black & White uses two tones, and Sepia uses four.

Dithering has two settings. Smooth leaves flat blocks of color. Retro dots applies 4 by 4 ordered Bayer dithering, which offsets each pixel by a repeating threshold pattern and produces the crosshatch look of old computer graphics. It suits limited palettes, and at very small sizes the pattern can look obvious. In this tool, with the Original palette, Retro dots adds pattern noise without reducing colors, so pair it with 8 colors, Game Boy, PICO-8 or Black & White.

You can also adjust brightness, contrast, saturation and zoom, and drag the preview to center a face. The Circle shape makes the corner pixels transparent, and you can add a background color or grid lines. The provided implementation processes your photo in the browser and has no upload step. If you would rather keep a photo smooth and frame it with a shape, border and text, the Avatar Generator does that, though it does not pixelate.

Which Controls Affect Which Character

Character Builder is a pixel character generator with five styles: Human, Robot, Alien, Cat and Ghost. You can build in Fine (a 36 by 36 sprite with an outline) or Classic (16 by 16). Not every control affects every character, which matters if you want a custom pixel avatar to look the way you planned:

  • Hair style and hair color affect only the Human.
  • Skin color affects the Human and the Cat, where it becomes the fur color. The Robot, Alien and Ghost bodies use fixed colors.
  • Eye color works on all five.
  • Outfit color works on every style except the Ghost.
  • The accessories (Glasses, Sunglasses, Mask, Crown and Headset) work on all five.

Random Character sets everything at once. Characters are square sprites, so the Circle shape applies to Photo mode only. If you are building a gaming profile, the Gaming Name Generator can supply a name to go with the character.

Walkthrough: A Selfie to a Game Boy Avatar

This walkthrough is illustrative, but the arithmetic is exact. Upload a selfie and drag it so the face is centered. Set Pixel Detail to 64, choose Game Boy and Retro dots, then pick Circle and Transparent if the avatar is for a round crop. The page should report 64 x 64 pixels and up to four colors.

Now check the download sizes, since the output is the grid times a whole number:

  • At 512, each pixel becomes an 8 by 8 block, and the file is exactly 512 pixels.
  • At 1024, blocks are 16 by 16 and the file is exactly 1024. At 256, blocks are 4 by 4.
  • With a grid of 48, the same downloads give 240, 528 and 1008 pixels.
  • A Fine character is 36 by 36, so a 512 download gives 504 pixels.

Grid sizes of 16, 32, 64 and 128 divide evenly into all three download sizes, so choose those if you need an exact result. For a pixel profile picture, upload at 512 or larger. Platforms resize uploads and crop most avatars to a circle, and a transparent PNG is shown on whatever sits behind it.

Questions the Tool Page Does Not Answer

Will the pixels stay sharp after I upload?

The downloaded PNG is sharp, but platforms usually resize uploads, and smoothing during a resize can soften hard edges. A grid that divides evenly into a large download, like 64 at 1024, gives the platform the cleanest starting point.

Why don't my grid lines show?

Lines are drawn only when each pixel is at least 6 pixels wide in the output. A grid of 128 at 512 gives 4-pixel cells, so no lines appear, while the same grid at 1024 gives 8-pixel cells and they do.

Can I add text or a badge to a pixel avatar?

No. This tool has no text or badge option. The Avatar Generator has both for photo avatars, but it does not turn them into pixel art.

Does the same photo give the same result every time?

Yes. Photo mode has no random element, so the same photo and settings give the same pixel art. Only Random Character in the builder picks at random.

Pick a Grid Size Before Anything Else

The grid decides how the avatar looks and what size the file will be, so settle it first. Start at 64, try one limited palette, and adjust from there. When the picture is done, the Username Generator can help you choose a handle that matches it.
