Your Avatar Is Judged at Thumbnail Size: Designing for Round Crops
One guide gives TikTok's profile picture display size as about 200 by 200 pixels, shown in a circle. In a comment thread or a chat list it is smaller still. Whatever you build in an avatar maker has to survive being shrunk to the size of a fingernail and trimmed to a circle.
The KromoTools Avatar Generator frames a photo or a few letters inside a designed shape. This guide covers what it does, what a platform does to the file afterward, and how to design for both.
What the Tool Does, and What It Does Not
You can start from a photo, from text, or from both. A photo can be zoomed from 0.3x to 3x and dragged into position, and six filters are available: Original, B&W, Sepia, Vivid, Vintage and Soft. Text can be up to 12 characters in one of five fonts, placed at the top, centre or bottom, and it shrinks automatically if it is too wide for the shape. Beyond that there are eight shapes, five background styles with 12 ready-made color pairs, five border styles, an optional shadow and 20 emoji badges you can pin to any corner. Downloads come in 300, 512 and 1024 pixels, and the PNG is exported at exactly the size you pick.
Two clarifications about the keywords people use. This is not an AI avatar generator. It composes your photo or initials with shapes and colors in the browser and cannot create a portrait from a description. It is also not a cartoon avatar generator, since none of the filters turns a face into a drawing. For character-style art, the Pixel Avatar Generator has a Character Builder that makes retro characters from scratch.
- In the provided implementation the photo is processed in your browser, and there is no upload step.
- The font styles use fonts installed on your device and fall back to others if missing, so exported text can look different from one device to another.
- The emoji badges are drawn with your device's emoji font, so they look different on iPhone, Android and Windows.
- Filters rely on your browser's canvas filter support. If one does nothing, try another browser.
- A GIF is drawn as a still image, and video files are not accepted.
- Nothing is saved beyond your current visit, so download what you want to keep.
What Round Crops and Transparency Do to Your PNG
Most personal avatars are masked to a circle by the platform. One guide lists X, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Discord and GitHub as doing so, with Slack using a rounded square. The mask is a cutout the platform draws, not a change to your file. Guides give 400 pixels as a common minimum for Instagram, X and LinkedIn and 800 for YouTube, so 512 works for most and 1024 covers YouTube.
That has two effects on a generated PNG. First, the shape matters. Circle, Hexagon, Diamond and Star all fit inside a circular crop, because their points sit within the circle. Rounded and Squircle have corners that extend past it and will be trimmed, and Heart and Shield are worth previewing before you commit. The tool also leaves a margin of about 16 pixels (3%) at 512, or 28 pixels (about 5%) with the shadow on, so your shape sits slightly inside the crop.
Second, transparency. The PNG has transparent corners outside the shape, and one guide notes that a platform composites a transparent PNG onto whatever it puts behind it, which is white in light mode and near-black in dark mode. A shape with no background can therefore look different between modes. If that matters, choose Solid or Gradient instead of None.
Pro Tips for an Avatar That Reads Small
- Preview it small. Zoom your browser out, or look at the preview from arm's length, before you download. If it is hard to read at about 200 pixels, simplify it.
- Use one or two letters. Large initials, like the default "XO", survive small sizes better than a word. Keep strong contrast between the text color and the background.
- Center the face. Drag the photo so the face sits in the middle, because the corners of a circular crop are only safe for background.
- Download once and reuse. A social media avatar generator is most useful when you keep one look across platforms. A 1024 px file covers YouTube's 800 and can be reused everywhere else.
- Pick the handle alongside the picture. The Username Generator suggests handles that fit each platform's length rules, so the name and the avatar can be chosen together.
Questions the Tool Page Does Not Answer
Why does my text look different on my phone?
The font styles depend on fonts installed on the device that exports the PNG. Impact or Arial Black may be missing on some phones and replaced by another font. Check the preview on the device you will download from.
Why does the emoji badge look different from what I saw?
Badges are drawn with the emoji font of the device doing the export. The same emoji looks different on iPhone, Android and Windows, so the downloaded PNG reflects the device you used.
Will a star or heart shape work on Instagram?
Instagram crops profile pictures to a circle. A star's points fit inside it, while a heart or shield may have parts trimmed. The Circle shape is the safest if you want what you see to be what you get.
How do I keep text readable over a photo?
The text has a soft shadow, but busy photos still reduce legibility. Try the B&W filter, move the text to the top or bottom, or use a lighter or darker text color than the area behind it.
Can I use any photo I find online?
The rights to a photo stay with whoever owns it, whatever tool you use to frame it. Use your own photos or ones you have permission to use. This is not legal advice.
Do the filters work in every browser?
They use your browser's canvas filter feature, and support can vary. If a filter appears to do nothing, try another browser or edit the photo first.
Check It Small Before You Upload
Shrink the preview, check that the corners hold only background, then download. Once the picture is set, the Instagram Bio Generator can draft the words that sit next to it.
