Why Emoji Kitchen Mashups Are Images, Not Emoji You Can Type
The mashups that Emoji Kitchen produces look like brand-new emoji, but they are not. They are image files drawn by designers at Google, which is why you can send one as a sticker but cannot drop it into the middle of a sentence. Knowing that saves a lot of confusion about where a mashup will and will not work.
This guide covers what Emoji Kitchen is, the other things people mean by "emoji combos", and how the KromoTools emoji mixer works, including where it stops.
Three Things People Mean by Emoji Combos
- Emoji Kitchen mashups. Google launched Emoji Kitchen in early 2020 inside Gboard on Android, grew it to more than 14,000 stickers by December 2020, and added it to Google Search in September 2023. A July 2024 Google post put the total at over 100,000 possible combinations. Each is a handcrafted image, not every pair has one, and flag emoji are not supported.
- Unicode sequences. Some real emoji are made by joining others with an invisible character called the zero width joiner. A woman plus a laptop becomes the woman technologist emoji, and a white flag plus a rainbow becomes the rainbow flag. These are text characters you can type anywhere that supports them. If a platform does not, it shows the parts separately, and only combinations on Unicode's approved list render as one image.
- Plain strings of emoji. Typing two emoji side by side is just two characters in a row.
The KromoTools tool does the first of these. It is not made by Google. The stickers are Google's artwork and the page loads them from Google's servers, so use them for sharing in chats rather than for anything commercial.
How the Mixer Works, and Where It Stops
The page has two tabs. Combine is the mixer, with two slots, a picker with seven categories and a search box. Once you choose the first emoji, the picker asks the tool's server which emojis have a sticker with it and shows only those, with a switch to show them all. When both slots are full the sticker appears on its own. Cook It refreshes it, Random Combo picks a working pair and Clear All resets everything. The Explore tab holds about 47 hand-picked combos that you can open in the mixer.
The page states its own figures, 619 emojis and 140K+ combinations. Google's most recent public number I found was over 100,000 as of July 2024, so the real total keeps moving as Google adds stickers. A few more limits apply:
- The result is an image. Copy puts a PNG on the clipboard where your browser allows it, Share works on devices that can share files and Save PNG downloads it. Many phone keyboards cannot paste images, so Share is the most reliable route on mobile.
- The tool depends on its own server and on Google's image hosting. If either is slow, you may see an "Emoji service is busy" message.
- The server receives the codes of the two emojis you pick, in order to look up the sticker. Nothing else you type is involved.
- The "Combos Cooked" counter covers only your current visit, and nothing is saved.
- The picker includes the magic wand emoji. Gboard uses it, followed by another emoji, to unlock hidden blob-style designs. I could not confirm whether this tool returns them, so try it and see.
Walkthrough: From Two Emojis to a Sticker in a Chat
- Open Combine, tap slot 1 and pick 😍 under Smileys, or search "heart eyes". The picker narrows to emojis that combine with it, and the note above the grid says how many there are.
- Search "fire" and pick 🔥. Both slots fill and the sticker loads by itself. This pair also appears as a card in Explore.
- On a computer, press Copy and paste into WhatsApp Web or another chat that accepts images. On a phone, press Share and choose the app, or press Save PNG and send it from your gallery.
- For random emoji combinations to browse, press Random Combo. Explore also has funny and cute pairs, such as a laughing face with a clown or a sleeping face with a koala.
Questions the Tool Page Does Not Answer
Can I use a mashup in my Instagram bio or caption?
No. Bios and captions take text, and the mashup is an image. Use ordinary emoji there. The Instagram Bio Generator can draft the words, though its templates do not include emojis, so you would add them yourself.
Is a mashup the same as typing both emoji?
No. Typing gives you two separate characters. The sticker is one merged picture designed for that pair.
Will a mashup look the same on every device?
Mostly yes. A sticker is a fixed image, while ordinary emoji are drawn in each platform's own style. How a chat app displays or resizes the image can still vary.
Can I use the stickers on a product or in an ad?
Probably not without permission. The stickers are Google's artwork, and sources describe third-party and commercial terms as unclear. This is not legal advice, so check Google's terms or ask a qualified professional before any commercial use.
What if I want something that is my own design?
KromoTools also has a Sticker Generator for making a sticker of your own rather than using Google's artwork.
Where to Send Your Mashup
Chats and stories that accept stickers or images are the natural home for a mashup. If you post one as an image, the Caption Generator can draft a line to go with it.
