FAQ

The tool reads the exact pixel value from the image's full resolution, so the HEX/RGB/HSL values shown are precisely what's stored in the image file at that point.
The tool samples colors across the whole image and groups similar shades together, then shows the most common distinct colors — giving you a quick overview of the image's overall color scheme.
No — everything happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded anywhere.

Image Color Picker – Find the Exact Color Code in Any Photo

You see a color in a photo, a screenshot or a logo and you need its code. Maybe you want to match a website button to a brand image, or copy a shade from a product photo into a design. Guessing by eye never gets it right. An image color picker solves this: you click a spot on the image and it tells you the exact value of that pixel.

Our color picker from image tool works with JPG, PNG and WEBP files. It shows the color as HEX, RGB and HSL, keeps a list of the colors you picked, and can extract a palette of the main colors in the picture. Everything runs inside your browser, so the image stays on your device.

How to Pick a Color from an Image

  1. Upload your image. Click Browse or drag and drop a JPG, PNG or WEBP file into the box.
  2. Click anywhere on the picture. The pixel you click is read and the large swatch updates with its HEX, RGB and HSL values.
  3. Copy the format you need. Each value has its own Copy button, so you can paste it straight into your CSS, design software or document.
  4. Reuse earlier picks. The "Recently Picked" row stores up to 16 colors. Click any swatch to bring its values back.
  5. Extract a palette if you want an overview. Click "Extract Palette" to see up to 10 dominant colors. Clicking a palette swatch selects it and copies its HEX code.

HEX, RGB and HSL: Which Code Do You Need?

The same color can be written in several ways. The tool shows three of the most common, so you can pick whichever your project asks for.

  • HEX (for example #DC2626) is the standard format for web design. It is short and works in CSS, HTML and most design apps.
  • RGB (for example rgb(220, 38, 38)) lists the red, green and blue amounts from 0 to 255. It is handy when a program asks for separate channel values.
  • HSL (for example hsl(0, 71%, 51%)) describes hue, saturation and lightness. It is the easiest format to adjust by hand: raise the lightness for a lighter shade, lower the saturation for a duller one.

How the Palette Extraction Works

When you click Extract Palette, the tool shrinks a copy of the image, groups similar shades together and counts how many pixels fall into each group. The ten largest groups are shown as swatches, and each group's displayed color is the average of the pixels inside it.

This gives a fast overview of an image's color scheme, which is useful as a starting point for a design. It is a quick approximation, not a professional color-science analysis, so the palette may miss a small accent color that covers only a few pixels. For a specific detail, click that spot directly instead.

When an Image Color Picker Is Useful

  • Web and UI design – pull a shade from a hero photo and use its HEX code for buttons, headings or backgrounds so the page matches the image.
  • Branding – check the color used in a logo or screenshot when you do not have the original brand guide.
  • Presentations and documents – match chart or text colors to a photo on the same slide.
  • Social media graphics – keep text overlays in harmony with the photo behind them.
  • Decor, fashion and craft projects – turn a photo you like into a set of codes you can compare with paint, fabric or yarn colors.
  • Learning – see how a color changes in HEX, RGB and HSL as you move across a gradient.

Tips for Getting an Accurate Color

  • Pick from flat areas. Edges, texture and fine detail mix several colors. A smooth area gives a cleaner reading.
  • Click a few nearby points. JPG compression adds tiny variations, so two neighboring pixels can differ slightly. Sample two or three spots and choose the one that looks right.
  • Remember lighting. A red shirt in shadow and the same shirt in sunlight give different codes. The tool reports what is in the image, not the "true" color of the real object.
  • Prefer the original file. A screenshot or re-saved image may already have shifted colors. Use the source image when exact matching matters.
  • Large images are scaled for picking. To keep the page fast, images with a side longer than 1200 pixels are scaled down inside the tool before colors are read. For normal color picking this makes no visible difference, but it means the value comes from the scaled copy.

Related Tools That Pair Well With the Color Picker

If your image is too large, use the Resize Image Tool first. If the image file is heavy and you want a lighter copy for your project, the Image Compressor can shrink it. If the color you need is in one small part of a bigger picture, the Crop Image Tool can isolate that area. If your color source is a page inside a document, convert it with the PDF to JPG converter and then pick colors from the result. And if you also want to know which camera or settings produced a photo, the Image EXIF/Metadata Viewer shows the photo's embedded metadata.

Privacy

The image is opened and read locally in your browser using the Canvas feature. It is not sent to a server by this tool.
