❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Instagram allows up to 30 per post, but many creators get good results with a focused 5 to 15 relevant hashtags. Relevance matters more than quantity.
Usually 3 to 6 relevant hashtags. Use one or two broad ones and a few specific to your video topic.
Better to rotate. Keep 2 or 3 branded hashtags and change the rest to match each post.
In the caption (after a few line breaks) or in the first comment. Pick whichever keeps your caption clean.

Five Hashtags, Not Thirty: Choosing Tags After Instagram's New Cap
In 2012, an album launch for a Scottish singer used a hashtag that, written in all lowercase, could be read as something rude. People still cite it as the classic hashtag blunder. The lesson is about clarity: a tag only works when it says what you mean, both to people and to software.
That lesson matters more now. Since Instagram announced a cap of five hashtags per post in December 2025, a hashtag generator is less about collecting thirty tags and more about choosing the few that fit. This guide covers what changed, how the KromoTools tool builds its sets, and how to get from a long list to your best five.
What Changed From Thirty Tags to Five
In December 2025 Instagram said it would gradually reduce the hashtags allowed in a post or Reel caption to five. Its reasoning was that fewer, more targeted tags tend to do better than many generic ones, and it asked people to avoid broad tags such as #reels and #explore, which spammers had been using. Reports also say hashtag following ended in late 2024, so a tag no longer delivers your post to a subscribed audience.
Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, has said more than once that hashtags do not lift reach on their own. They help tell people and the system what a post is about. That makes labelling the best use of hashtags for Instagram posts: a handful of tags that describe the post in words your caption does not already use. TikTok is looser, and some guides say it has no firm cap, but most advice there also lands on three to five.
How This Hashtag Maker Builds a Set
The KromoTools Instagram hashtag generator works from a built-in list of roughly 600 hashtags across 15 niches, from lifestyle and fitness to pets and sports. Each niche has three tiers, high, medium and niche, shown with estimated post counts. Those tiers were assigned by hand, not pulled from live data, and the page says so. A true trending hashtag generator would need live platform data, which this tool does not have. The Trending Hashtag Finder lets you browse the same curated database by niche and keyword, with the same limitation.
When you type a topic, the tool also builds extra tags from it. "yoga" becomes #yoga in the high tier, then pattern tags such as #yogalife and #yogatips in the medium tier and #yogalovers and #yogadaily in the niche tier. These come from formulas and are not checked against Instagram, so some may have few or no posts. A topic typed in a non-Latin script has those characters stripped, so it produces no topic tags at all.
The platform menu matters less than it looks. Choosing TikTok adds #fyp, #foryou and #foryoupage to the high tier, and YouTube adds three YouTube tags to the medium tier. Instagram, X and All Platforms give sets built the same way and differ only in the tip text. For TikTok, the TikTok Caption Generator attaches five niche hashtags to each caption it writes. AI Magic is separate: it sends your topic, platform and niche to a server and returns sets of tags, limited to 10 requests per IP address every two hours.
A Worked Example With the Numbers
The split depends on your count: roughly 35% high, 40% medium and the remainder niche. At the default of 30 that is 11 high, 12 medium and 7 niche. At 20 it is 7, 8 and 5, and at the minimum of 10 it is 4, 4 and 2.
Here is an illustrative run with the topic "yoga", niche Fitness and a count of 10. The high tier gets #yoga plus three random fitness tags. The medium tier gets #yogalife, #yogacommunity, #yogatips and #yogagoals, and the niche tier gets #yogalovers and #yogadaily. At a count this small, the medium and niche tiers are made entirely of pattern tags. If you leave the topic blank, every tag comes from the curated lists instead. Neither is better, but it helps to know which you are holding.
Pro Tips: Turning a Long List Into Your Best Five
- Be wary of the broadest tags. The Lifestyle high tier includes tags like #love and #instagood, exactly the generic kind Instagram has told people to avoid. The niche tier is usually the better place to look.
- Search each tag before you use it. Type it into Instagram search and check that it has posts and that they resemble yours. This catches pattern tags that do not really exist.
- Use tags for words your caption lacks. Draft the caption first with the Caption Generator, then pick tags that add new terms rather than repeat the ones already in the text.
- Capitalise each word. The tool outputs all lowercase, but accessibility guidance recommends writing #YogaForBeginners rather than #yogaforbeginners, because screen readers tend to read a run-together lowercase tag as one long word.
- Keep tags in the caption. Instagram's own search guidance has advised keeping keywords and hashtags in the caption rather than in comments.
Questions the Tool Page Does Not Answer
Why can't I find some of the tags it gave me?
Topic-based tags such as #yogajourney or #bestyoga are built from patterns, not looked up. Some will be empty or barely used. Search them on Instagram and drop the ones that do not exist.
Are the volume numbers real?
No, they are labels. The tiers say "typically 1M+ posts", "100K to 1M" and "under 100K", and the tool assigns each tag to a tier by hand. Real post counts change, so verify any tag you care about.
What does the Volume filter do?
It only hides or shows the tiers on screen. The Copy All box still holds the full set, so if you want just one tier, click individual tags instead, since each click copies one.
What does Copy for Instagram change?
It adds three lines containing a dot before the hashtags. That is spacing only and does not change how Instagram treats the tags.
Can I type my topic in Urdu, Hindi or Arabic?
You can, but the tool strips non-Latin characters when building topic tags, so you would only get the niche tags. Typing the topic in English letters, such as "fitness", works as intended.
Does capitalisation change which posts I reach?
Hashtag searches are generally not case sensitive, so capitalising each word mainly helps readability and screen readers. Test it on the platform if it matters to you.
Pick Five, Then Move On
Generate a set, remove anything generic or unverified, capitalise each word and keep the five that describe your post best. That takes a few minutes and beats pasting thirty tags the platform no longer accepts.
